Sacred Peak
Connecting sky and earth.
Humans sense the air within nature and listen to its silence.
Since ancient times, people have shown gratitude toward the power and greatness of nature, joining their hands in reverence
and devotion.
imbued with life.
Feeling the world and the universe—both composed of particles and molecules—we recognize that all things are connected and
This work is created on mirrored steel plates.
The earth itself is often called a planet of iron.
The mirror, one of the Three Sacred Treasures of Japan, reflects all things universally, serving as a symbol of wisdom that
distinguishes truth from falsehood.
On the stage of Noh theater, the “kagami-ita” mirror panel marks a sacred space, where it was believed that deities would dwell
within the pine leaves depicted upon it.
Japanese painting is distinguished by its flat expression, delicate brushwork, use of negative space, a subtractive approach to
color, and its evocation of atmosphere.
I reinterpret these qualities by carving into the surface, practicing subtraction through removal, creating new spaces of
emptiness, and shaping dimensionality with points, lines, and washi paper while infusing a sense of air.
By incorporating mirrored surfaces, the work reflects light during the day to make Mount Fuji shine, and absorbs light at night to
accentuate its presence.
