PROFILE
Natsuo Shimizu began tap dancing at the age of seven, studying under Hiroko Higuchi and HIDEBOH, leading figures in Japan’s tap dance scene. He gained recognition as a promising young talent, performing in numerous stage productions, events, and TV programs, including Takeshi Kitano’s film "Zatoichi".
Later, Shimizu collaborated with ballet dancer Kazuhiro Nishijima and world-renowned trumpeter Terumasa Hino. Following his studies in France, he discovered new possibilities in tap dancing and developed a style showcasing his world-class technique and lightning-fast footwork.
Never content with relying solely on his exceptional technical skills, Shimizu focuses on achieving higher musicality and expressive dance performance, striving to create an unprecedented tap dance style. His innovative approach has been widely praised, even in New York, the home of tap dance. He won a weekly championship on Amateur Night at the Apollo, a prestigious platform for global performers, and his performance at the Cotton Club earned him the accolade of being “the reincarnation of Mr. Bojangles,” leaving Harlem audiences in awe.
In the film TAP: THE LAST SHOW, directed by Yutaka Mizutani, Natsuo was cast as Makoto, the lead dancer central to the story. He showcased his unique tap style to the fullest, including his signature "10 Counts" move, a groundbreaking feat only he can perform.
In November 2019 and April 2022, he was invited by world-renowned tap dancer Tamangoh to perform at the international dance festival Dances Métisses in Toulouse, Southern France, and French Guiana in South America. His solo performances received thunderous applause and standing ovations.
At the 2022 Tokyo International Film Festival's Akira Kurosawa Award Ceremony, Shimizu performed in an entertainment show produced by globally acclaimed fashion designer Junko Koshino, earning rave reviews.
7 歳よりタップダンスを始め、日本のタップダンスシーンの第一人者である火口ひろ子、HIDEBOH らに師事。北野武監督作品『座頭市』はじめ、多くの舞台・イベント・TV 番組で若手のホープとして 活躍する。その後、バレエダンサー 西島数博氏や世界的トランペット奏者日野皓正氏らとの 共演、更にフランス留学を経てタップの新たな可能性を見出し、持ち前の世界トップレベルと評されるテクニック&光速ステップを武器に活動を展開。自身の最大の強みである足元の技術に満足することなく、より高い音楽性とダンス的表現力にこだわった、前人未踏のTAPスタイルを追求している。そのスタイルは TAP の本場ニューヨークでも大絶賛され、世界的パフォーマーの登竜門 Amateur Night at the Apollo では 1 週勝抜き、また Cotton Club でのパフォーマンスはタップの神様 “Mr.ボージャングルズの再来”と、本場 Harlem の住人をも唸らせた。水谷豊初監督作品『TAP THE LAST SHOW』では、ストーリーの軸となるメインダンサー MAKOTO に大抜擢。世界で夏生にしかできないオリジナルの大技”10 Counts”を筆頭に、 築き上げてきた唯一無二の TAP を存分に披露した。2019 年 11 月、そして2022年4月には南仏のトゥールーズ、そして南米フランス領ギアナにて、世界的タップダンサーTamangoh 氏に招かれ、 国際ダンスフェスティバル『Dances Métisses』に出演。 渾身のタップソロは大喝采を浴び、スタンディングオベーションを巻き起こした。
2022年に開催された東京国際映画祭、黒澤明賞授賞式典では世界的ファッションデザイナーJUNKO KOSHINO氏プロデュースのエンターテインメントショーに出演、大好評を得た。
