Yuta Nawa
PROFILE
Yuta Nawa is a Japan-based contemporary artist
born in Kumamoto in 1982 and currently based in Tokyo.
He graduated from Kuwasawa Design School
(Fashion Department, evening course), where he received a newcomer award.
He began his career as a visual merchandiser at ESTNATION,
where he was responsible for menswear direction and regional visual strategies,
gaining extensive experience in spatial and visual presentation.
After leaving ESTNATION, he studied under calligrapher Kogen Okakuwa,
deepening his practice in calligraphy.
He is a member of Dokuritsu Shojin-dan a
nd has been selected for the Mainichi Calligraphy Exhibition.
His works were exhibited at The National Art Center, Tokyo from 2017 to 2025.
Seeking new modes of expression,
Nawa developed works focusing on the moment when letters emerge.
He presented “grace,” capturing the instant of formation,
and “about eternity,” a pure white exploration of time and existence,
at a gallery in New York. “grace” was later featured in a French art magazine.
In recent years, he has expanded his practice by using iron plates as a canvas,
layering particles to visualize mass and time.
These works are permanently installed at Mercedes-Benz.
He also presented “Reiho (Sacred Peak),”
a reinterpretation of traditional Japanese painting on mirrored steel surfaces.
His upcoming exhibition is scheduled for
January 2026 at Azabudai Hills (Ogaki Bookstore Gallery), Tokyo.
Today, Nawa continues to work across multiple mediums
—including calligraphy, collage, material experimentation, live painting,
and branding—creating works that exist at the intersection of art and design.

1982年熊本県生まれ東京在住
桑沢デザイン研究所2部服装科を修了（新人賞受賞）
株式会社ESTNATIONにてヴィジュアルマーチャンダイザーとしてキャリアをスタートし、
メンズ統括および地方店舗のビジュアル戦略を担当。
空間・視覚演出の分野で経験を積んだ後、書家・岡桑玄に師事し、本格的に書の道へ進む。
独立書人団 会友。毎日書道展入選。
2017年から2025年にかけて国立新美術館にて作品を発表。
その後、文字の成り立ちや時間性に着目した表現の探求を進め、
ニューヨークのギャラリーにて、文字が生まれる瞬間を捉えた作品「grace」や、
純白の表現による「about eternity」を発表。
「grace」はフランスのアート誌にも掲載される。
近年では鉄板をキャンバスに用い、
粒子を重ねることで質量と時間を可視化する作品を制作。
これらの作品はMercedes-Benzにて常設展示されている。
また、鏡面鉄板に日本画を再解釈した作品「霊峰」を発表。
2026年1月には麻布台ヒルズ・大垣書店ギャラリーにて展示を予定。
現在は書を基盤としながら、
コラージュ、素材表現、ライブペインティング、ロゴデザインなど
多様なアウトプットを通じて、
アートとデザインの境界を横断する活動を展開している。
